You give it a starting point, just like saying, "Hey, can you tell me about dinosaurs?" or "Can you help me with a story idea?" These starting points are prompts.
Using prompts is easy:
Think of what you want to know or talk about.
Type it in the chatbox as a question or a sentence.
Hit enter, and ChatGPT will start chatting with you based on what you asked.
From there you can fine-tune what you are trying to accomplish by asking it to expand, explain, re-write, etc.
For example, if you're curious about space, you can ask, "Tell me about planets." ChatGPT will then respond with information about planets. Then from there to fine tune its response you can then chat back to it and say something like, “Can you expand on what Mars is and how it formed as a planet?”. And from there you can even let it get more creative by saying, “Ok ChatGPT, now can you write a 1,000 word explanation on Mars, why it’s red, how long it would take to get there from Earth, and anything else you think might be important?”. As you can see you can really get really granular on what you are trying to accomplish with ChatGPT’s output.
