🤓 Google's AI Homework Button For a Stress Free Life!

Plus: Hack for Parents - Finding the Right Phone Number Fast!

Hello, awesome parental units!

Are you tired of watching your kids struggle with homework? Are YOU struggling with your kid’s homework? Yes I know, we have to re-learn what we forgot in elementary and high school sometimes. We should have paid attention, right? We all know the feeling math problems that don’t seem to make sense, history questions with complicated answers, and science projects that take up the entire kitchen. Homework can be tough for our kids (and for us parents who are trying to help!). But Google has come up with something new that might make all of that a little easier: the Homework Help button.

Today, I’ll be walking you through how this feature works, step-by-step, with helpful screenshots. We’ll also talk about how it can help your kids learn better and what you should keep in mind as they use it.

What Is the Homework Help Button?

Google has added a Homework Help button to its search engine and Google Lens, and it’s designed to help kids get the answers they need for their homework. This button lets students use their phone’s camera to snap a picture of their homework problems. Then, Google will scan it, understand what the question is, and show how to solve it.

This feature works for math, science, and even other subjects like history, English or geography. Instead of just giving the answer, Google tries to break it down into simple steps. That way, kids can actually learn how to solve the problem themselves instead of just copying the answer.

Now, let's walk through how to use this feature with the help of some screenshots I took on my phone.

Step 1: Finding the Homework Help Button

In this first screenshot, you’ll see what the Homework Help button looks like in the Google phone app. I have marked it here in pink. It’s super easy to find. Once you open the Google app on your phone, the Homework Help button is right below the search bar. It’s sitting there with other helpful tools, like the Translate Text feature (which is also pretty handy if your kids are learning a new language or taking a foreign language class).

The Homework Help button is highlighted with a little graduation cap icon. That’s the one you’ll want to tap to get started with your homework support.

Step 2: Snap a Picture of the Problem

Once you tap on the Homework Help button, the next step is to snap a picture of the homework problem you need help with. In this second screenshot, you’ll see what that looks like. I used the camera to take a picture of a math problem: “X + 5 = 10.”

Google uses Google Lens to scan the picture and immediately understands that it’s a math equation. You don’t have to worry about typing the problem into a search bar or struggling to explain it. Google will recognize the question on its own. Pretty cool!

Step 3: Click The “Show Solving Steps" Button

In the screenshot you just uploaded, there’s an incredibly useful feature that parents and students alike should know about, the "Show Solving Steps" button. This option is a key part of Google’s Homework Help tool, and it’s designed to do more than just give your child the final answer. It’s about teaching the process behind solving the problem.

When you tap the "Show Solving Steps" button, Google breaks down the solution into easy-to-understand steps.

Step 4: Google Breaks Down the Problem

After you click on the “Show Solving Steps” button it shows the steps your child should follow to get the right answer themselves. In the screenshot below, Google breaks it down into Step 1 and Step 2. It explains that to solve for X, we need to move the “+5” to the other side of the equation. Google even explains that the sign changes, which is important for kids to understand. Finally, it shows that the solution to the problem is “X = 5.”

This kind of step-by-step explanation is so helpful because it shows kids why the answer is what it is. Instead of just copying the answer, they’re learning the process, which can help them later when they’re tested on similar problems.

Why the Homework Help Button Is So Useful

Now that we’ve walked through how to use the Homework Help button, let’s talk about why it’s so helpful. There are a lot of reasons this new feature from Google can make homework time less stressful for both parents and kids.

1. It’s Easy to Use

First and foremost, this feature is really easy to use. All you need is a smartphone and the Google app. Once the app is open, a few taps are all it takes to get started. Even kids who aren’t super tech-savvy should be able to figure it out, especially if they’re used to using apps on their phone. And since the Homework Help button uses Google Lens to scan the problem, there’s no need to type anything. That’s a big win for busy families.

2. It Provides Step-by-Step Explanations

One of the best things about this feature is that it doesn’t just spit out an answer. It actually walks your child through the steps they need to take to solve the problem. This is a huge advantage over other homework apps or websites that might just give kids the final answer without explaining how they got there.

The step-by-step breakdown encourages kids to learn how to solve the problem. This means they’ll be better prepared when they encounter similar problems on quizzes or tests in the future. Plus, it helps them understand concepts better in the long run.

3. It’s Not Just for Math

While this example uses a math problem, the Homework Help button can work for other subjects too. If your child has a tricky history question or a confusing science problem, the feature can still help. Google will scan the text and offer explanations and resources, just like it does with math. This makes it a really versatile tool for homework across all subjects.

4. It’s Available Anytime

The Homework Help button is available 24/7, which means you and your child can use it together whenever they’re working on their homework, whether it’s during the afternoon, late at night, or even on the weekend. This is especially helpful for families with busy schedules. You don’t have to wait for tutoring sessions or try to solve everything at once when you get home from work. Google’s always there to lend a hand!

Tips for Parents Using the Homework Help Button

While this new feature is super helpful, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your kids get the most out of it.

1. Encourage Them to Try First

It’s easy to rely on technology for quick answers, but make sure you encourage your kids to try the problem on their own first. If they’re stuck, that’s the perfect time to use the Homework Help button. This way, they won’t get into the habit of turning to Google for every problem right away. Let them struggle at first, it’s an important part of learning.

2. Review the Steps with Your Kids

After Google shows the steps to solving the problem, take a few minutes to go over them with your child. Ask questions like, “Why do you think we moved the +5 to the other side?” or “What do you think would happen if this was a subtraction problem?” Going over the steps together will help solidify their understanding of the concept.

3. Monitor Usage

Since this tool is so convenient, it can be tempting for kids to overuse it. It’s important to set boundaries and make sure that they’re not using it as a crutch. Explain that the Homework Help button is there to help them learn, not just to give them answers.

Why This Feature Is a Game-Changer for Parents

As parents, we’ve all been in situations where we don’t have the time or energy to help with homework. Maybe you’re making dinner, or maybe you’re just not sure how to explain that algebra problem. The Homework Help button gives you a little extra backup.

Instead of sitting there scratching your head, you can let Google explain the steps. It’s like having a tutor on call whenever you need it. That’s especially helpful if your child is working on homework outside of school hours when their teacher isn’t available to help.

BONUS: Quick Hack for Parents - Finding the Right Phone Number Fast!

Isn’t it a total pain in the butt when you need to find the direct phone number or email for exactly the person or business you’re looking for? We’ve all been there, right? You waste time searching through endless websites, clicking around, and still can’t find what you need. Well, let me share a little hack with you that saved me a ton of time the other day.

I had to get the direct phone number for the San Francisco Mayor's Office, and like most people, I thought I’d start with Google. But after scrolling through a bunch of unhelpful links, I came up empty. Then I thought, “Why not ask ChatGPT?” So I gave it a try—and BOOM! ChatGPT came through and found it in seconds!

Here’s how you can do it too:

When you need a direct number, just prompt ChatGPT with something like this:

"Hi, please find the direct number to [enter person, business, or entity here]. You know the entire internet, and I know you can do it because you are awesome. Take a deep breath first and go find it, please. You got this! Thank you!"

It’s as easy as that! ChatGPT will do the heavy lifting and save you the headache of digging through search results. Give it a try next time you need to track down a number or email fast. You’ll be amazed how quickly it works!
