Back-to-School Tech Help for Parents and Their Kids

As the school bells ring in a new academic year, parents everywhere are gearing up for the hustle and bustle that comes with getting their kids back into the classroom. From managing schedules and keeping track of assignments to ensuring that kids are staying engaged and motivated, there's a lot on a parent's plate. Fortunately, technology can be a powerful ally in helping you navigate these challenges with ease. In this week’s newsletter, we'll explore the best back-to-school tech tools that can make your life as a parent more manageable, and your kids' school year more successful.

1. Digital Planners and Calendars: Mastering the Family Schedule

One of the biggest challenges for parents during the school year is managing everyone's schedules. Between school drop-offs and pick-ups, extracurricular activities, doctor appointments, and social events, it can feel like you're constantly juggling.

  • Google Calendar: Google Calendar is a versatile tool that allows you to create multiple calendars for each family member, color-code them, and share them with everyone. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and prevents scheduling conflicts. You can also set reminders for important events, making sure nothing slips through the cracks.

  • Cozi Family Organizer: Cozi is a family-centric app that combines a shared calendar, to-do lists, meal planning, and a journal all in one place. The app is designed to keep everyone in the family on track, and it’s particularly useful for parents with multiple children in different activities. Cozi also has a feature where you can send out daily or weekly agendas to keep everyone informed.

  • Apple Calendar: For iPhone users, Apple’s built-in calendar app is highly effective for syncing schedules across all Apple devices. It integrates seamlessly with other apps like Reminders and Notes, allowing you to coordinate various aspects of your family life.

My family (The Beringers) uses Apple Calendar. It’s a lifesaver! 😃

2. Homework Help: AI Tutors and Educational Apps

Homework time can be a battleground in many households, but with the right tools, it can become a more peaceful and productive experience.

  • Photomath: If math is causing frustration, Photomath is a lifesaver. This app allows kids (or parents) to take a picture of a math problem, and it not only provides the solution but also breaks down the steps to solve it. This is a great way to support your child's learning without doing the work for them.

  • Brainly: Brainly is a social learning platform where students can ask homework questions and get help from peers, teachers, and experts. It's like having a tutor on call 24/7. Parents can also use Brainly to get quick explanations for challenging subjects, making it easier to help their kids with assignments.

  • Quizlet: Quizlet allows students to create digital flashcards for studying or use pre-made sets created by other users. It's a fantastic tool for memorization and review, especially for subjects like vocabulary, history, and science.

  • ChatGPT: ChatGPT can be an invaluable resource for parents helping their kids with homework. Instead of just providing the answer, ChatGPT can walk your child through the problem-solving process step by step, explaining how the solution was arrived at. This approach not only helps your child complete their homework but also deepens their understanding of the subject matter.

At home, my wife and I use Photomath and ChatGPT. These do not just give the answers. It walks you and your kids step by step on how to get the answer. It’s amazing! 😅

3. Healthy Screen Time: Apps and Tools to Monitor and Manage

With the increased reliance on digital tools for learning, it’s more important than ever to manage your child's screen time effectively.

  • Screen Time: Screen Time is an app that allows parents to monitor and control how much time their kids spend on their devices. You can set daily limits, block certain apps during homework time, and even schedule "off-screen" hours to ensure that your child is getting enough rest and engaging in other activities.

  • Apple’s Screen Time: For those using Apple devices, the built-in Screen Time feature allows parents to monitor and control app usage across all their children’s devices. You can set app limits, downtime, and content restrictions to ensure that your child is using their device responsibly.

Me and my family use the Apple Screen time manager. Works like a charm! 😄

4. Educational Podcasts and Audiobooks: Learning on the Go

If your child is spending time in the car or on the bus, why not turn that time into an opportunity for learning?

  • Audible: Audible offers a vast library of audiobooks that are perfect for kids. Whether it’s a classic novel or a modern-day adventure, audiobooks can help foster a love of reading and improve comprehension skills. Parents can listen alongside their kids, turning car rides into a shared educational experience.

  • Brains On!: Brains On! is a science podcast for kids that makes learning fun. Each episode explores a different topic, from the science of sound to the mysteries of space. It's a great way to keep kids engaged and curious about the world around them.

We love Audible. Have your kids start listening to books there. Try to have them read and listen at the same time. Game changer!

5. Healthy Meals and Snack Planning: Tech for Nutrition

Keeping your kids fueled with healthy meals and snacks is crucial for their concentration and energy levels throughout the school day.

  • Mealime: Mealime is a meal-planning app that allows you to create quick, healthy meals tailored to your family's dietary preferences. You can generate shopping lists and even integrate them with grocery delivery services. It's perfect for busy parents who want to ensure their kids are eating well without spending hours in the kitchen.

  • Yummly: Yummly offers personalized recipe recommendations based on your family's tastes, dietary needs, and what's already in your pantry. The app also provides nutritional information, helping you make healthier choices for your kids.

  • Bento: Bento is an app that helps parents create visually appealing and nutritious lunch boxes for their kids. The app offers creative ideas for packing balanced meals that your kids will actually want to eat, turning lunchtime into something they look forward to.

Bento is fricken awesome! 🍱

6. Safety First: Apps and Gadgets to Keep Kids Safe

As kids become more independent, especially older ones, it’s important to have tools in place to ensure their safety.

  • Life360: Life360 is a location-sharing app that allows families to keep track of each other's whereabouts in real-time. The app also offers features like driving safety reports and emergency alerts, giving parents peace of mind when their kids are out and about.

  • Tile: Tile is a Bluetooth tracker that can be attached to your child's backpack, lunchbox, or other important items. If something gets lost, you can easily locate it using the Tile app on your phone. It’s a simple way to avoid those frantic morning searches for misplaced items.

  • Bark: Bark is an app that monitors your child's online activity, including social media, emails, and texts, for signs of cyberbullying, inappropriate content, or potential dangers. The app alerts parents to any concerning behavior while respecting their child's privacy.

Life360 is what we use with my family. Peace of mind… check!

7. Mental Health Support: Apps for Emotional Well-Being

The school year can be stressful for kids, and supporting their mental health is just as important as supporting their academic success.

  • Headspace for Kids: Headspace offers guided meditation and mindfulness exercises specifically designed for kids. These exercises can help them manage stress, improve focus, and develop a healthy mindset. Parents can also join in, creating a family practice of mindfulness.

  • Calm: Calm is another great app that offers relaxation exercises, sleep stories, and calming sounds. It’s particularly helpful for winding down after a long school day and can be used by both kids and parents.

We love these apps but we also have our own chosen breathing technique we do with our kids. It’s called 4-7-8 breathing. My daughters love doing it, and it is quick and easy to do. Plus the calming results are amazing!

In fact my daughters beg me before bedtime to do it because it helps them sleep so well through the night. 😴

Me and my wife do this as well. It is very relaxing.

Wrapping Up

With these tools and gadgets at your disposal, you can navigate the back-to-school season with confidence and ease. Remember, the key to successfully integrating technology into your family's routine is to find a balance that works for everyone. By staying organized, supporting your child's learning, and making safety a priority, you'll set the stage for a successful and enjoyable school year.
